Question:
What files does Project X install on my Mac and where are they located? If I want to completely uninstall the program what do I need to remove?

Answer:

  • The ProjectX Application folder in the Applications folder contains the ProjectX application and documentation.
  • The ProjectX folder in Users/Home/Library/Application Support folder contains Default Calendars.xml, Resources Calendar.xml and the Templates folder.
  • The com.marware.projectx.plist file in User/Home/Library/Preferences folder.
  • The ProjectXWebApp folder in Users/Home/Sites folder contains all the files necessary to publish projects to the Web as well as the ProjectXWebApp.

Question:
When I try to install Project X, it asks me to enter a password. What is my Password?

Answer:

Project X does not require a password. However your Mac will ask you for your user account password whenever installing any application. This is the password you created when you setup your Mac.

Question:
Can I import data from another program into Project X?

Answer:

Project X imports .mpp from Microsoft Project as well as comma separated value files that have a .csv extension. A .csv file can be exported from other project management applications or from database or spreadsheet programs.

Note: When exporting such a file from another application, make sure to export a header row. A header row identifies the data contained in each column of the .csv file, and will simplify Importing the file into Project X. If your file does not contain a header row and you select “Import File Contains Header Row,” the first row of data in your file will not be imported.

Question:
I use Microsoft Entourage for email. Are there any issues I should be concerned with using Entourage with Project X?

Answer:

If you use Microsoft Entourage as your default mail application, and you select “Warn Before allowing an external application to send mail” in the Entourage Preferences, Project X waits until you dismiss Entourage’s warning dialog before completing any action that involves sending an email.

Question:
How do I prevent the Project Inspector from opening up every time I launch Project X?

Answer:

If you do not want the Project Inspector to appear each time you create a new project, you can turn this feature off in Project X > Preferences by deselecting “Show Project Inspector at startup.”

The settings in the Project Inspector affect only the current project. To change the settings for all projects, see Preferences.

Question:
I changed the settings in the Project Inspector but whenever I create a new project file the settings revert back to the defaults. How do I keep the same settings in new projects?

Answer:

Use Project X > Preferences to customize settings for all new projects. The Project Inspector is used change the settings for the current project only. If you want to retain settings you’ve changed in the Project Inspector, you can click “Make default for all projects” in Project Inspector > Settings to update the Preferences.

Question:
I just created a project in Project X 1.0 and I cannot add a new task to the project. I am in the Network view and I have the New Task tool selected. When I click in the area to create a new task the computer beeps at me and nothing more happens.

Answer:

This has been identified as a bug in the installer. It occurs in some situations where the ownership of the file placed within the application support file does not get its permissions (ownership) changed to the correct user. To solve this, remove the file the installer places in your application support folder. It is not necessary to reinstall after this action, as launching the application will recreate the file with the correct permissions.

Question:
Why can’t I change the Start or Finish dates for sub-projects?

Answer:

Subprojects have no calendar pickers for Start and Finish dates or for durations. This is because Start, Finish and Durations for subprojects are calculated based on the Tasks they contain.

Question:
What are the options I have for displaying Task durations?

Answer:
In the Network view the duration of a task is displayed in the center right of the task box. In the Outline view, the duration is displayed in the Duration column. In the Timeline (Gantt) view, the duration is displayed when you pause the mouse over a taskbar in the right pane. The duration can also be displayed by adding a Duration column in the left pane.

Question:
Can I view multiple projects within the Timeline view in Project X?

Answer:

Currently we do not support multiple projects within the same timeline view, however it is possible to publish all of the tasks in the projects to iCal from both projects. This will allow you to view a timeline of multiple projects from within iCal.

Answer:

When you need to add Resources to your projects you can simply use the Address Book to drag-n-drop them onto a task. Resources and be dragged directly from the Groups or Individual section of Address Book onto tasks in the Network, Outline or Timeline views. You can also drag groups or individuals directly into the corresponding fields within the Resources view or into the Task Inspector's Resources tab.

Question:
Can I merge projects in Project X?

Answer:

Currently Project X 1.0 does not merge documents. It is however something we plan to add to the application in the future.

Question:
Is there a way to attach a graphic or customize the representation of the Baseline?

Answer:

Currently in version 1,0 there is no way to attach a graphic or customize the representation of the Baseline. However, in the outline view we do have the option of editing the header and footer and you could include a legend for printing of the outline. To access this component click on the gear icon in the lower left side of the window.

Question:
Can my resources connect to the web application from outside our local network?

Answer:
The web application within Project X 1.0 does not support connections outside the local network. However, there are some scenarios that would allow you access outside of the local area network.

The Project X web application is hosted on your computer using the built-in Apache web server that comes bundled with OS X. With this in mind, If your computer was connected directly to a modem with no firewall restrictions (not recommended) you would, in theory be able to make the connection to the Project X web application.

Another possible solution is to use a VPN tunnel, which many offices use to connect remote employees to their network. If you already have this in place and you are connected to the local network you should be able to connect with the credentials that Project X provides on publishing.

In a future release of Project X we will support remote web application hosting and more resources for the project manager when working remotely. Check the Project X web site periodically for announcements on new versions and updates. Feedback regarding advanced features are always welcome and appreciated and can be submitted in the Project X forum > Suggestions.

Question:
My password does not work when I try to access a published project. How can I access the published project?

Answer:
Published projects are accessible only to resources that have beed assigned to tasks. If you are a resource you will have access only to tasks assigned to you. If you are the Project Manager you must have at least one task assigned to you before you can access the published project.

Question:
How do I view detailed resource information in Project X?

Answer:
